It appears there is more happening in the trans-Tasman beverages market than simply Foster’s ((FGL)) trying to separate its market leading beer and wine operations. The Australian Financial Review has revealed on Monday morning both parent companies of two other leading beverages companies in Australia and New Zealand have been in talks for about six months to discuss a merger that will shake up, if not reshape the sector.

According to the newspaper, Lion Nathan’s ((LNN)) 46% Japanese shareholder Kirin Holdings Co and US based The Coca-Cola Company, 30% shareholder of Coca-Cola Amatil ((CCL)), have intensified merger talks in recent weeks.

The newspaper does not name its sources, but Lion Nathan shares have been suspended in New Zealand this morning.
