The rumour is not new, but if someone is going to bid for Queensland’s Suncorp-Metway (SUN) who else than HBOS, the company formed in September 2001 following a merger between Halifax and Bank of Scotland?

According to our sources in the London market, rumours are going around HBOS is studying a bid for Suncorp-Metway. HBOS is the UK’s largest mortgage and savings provider, the company’s website informs us. In Australia, the company is probably best known as the full owner of Bank of Western Australia.

Suncorp-Metway is currently trying to “merge” with insurer Promina (PMN).
