Oz Retail Sales Continue To Grow At 0.4% (Trend)

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports the trend estimate of turnover for the Australian Retail and Hospitality/Services series increased by 0.4% in November 2006.

This follows increases of 0.4% in both October and September 2006.

According to the ABS, all states and territories experienced an increase in the trend estimate, except Northern Territory which was flat. The largest increases occurred in the Australian Capital Territory (+1.0%) and Western Australia (+0.9%).

Seasonally adjusted the estimated turnover for the Australian Retail and Hospitality/Services series increased by 0.2% in November last year. This follows a revised increase of 0.9% in October 2006 and an increase of 0.3% in September 2006.

This time the ABS reports all states and territories experienced increases in the seasonally adjusted estimate, except New South Wales and South Australia which were both flat. Again the largest increase occurred in the Australian Capital Territory (+0.8%).

The ABS also reports that in original terms Australian turnover increased by 3.4% in November 2006 compared with the previous month of October. Chains and other large retailers (which are completely enumerated) increased by 4.3%, while the estimate for ‘smaller’ retailers (denominated as “the sampled units”) increased by 2.2%.

Australian turnover increased by 7.2% in November 2006 compared with November 2005, the ABS reports, adding chains and other large retailers increased by 7.4%, while ‘smaller’ retailers increased by 7.0%.
