BHP Tinto? It’s Just Not On!

Merrill Lynch resources expert Vicky Binns is attending a conference in Dublin, observing that overall optimism in the sector is a bit less than last year, but a sudden attack of M&A fever has certainly made up for that this week.

It’s Vicky’s observation that “investors are preoccupied with determining who will end up owning Alcan; who could take out Rio Tinto; and who will miss out in the frenzy.”

With regards to the most talked about rumour this week, the Merrill Lynch analyst reported back to the homefront that “after talking to the major players here” she “strongly” (her term) believes, that BHP Billiton (BHP) is not in the market for Rio Tinto (RIO).
