A brief look at important company events and economic data releases next week.

- It never rains but it pours. Barring a much better-than-expected US August CPI print to be announced Friday US time, September is looking like the well-flagged risk-off month, albeit thus far, the bond market reactions have been more pronounced than equities. The S&P500 is only down some -3% from its May highs, going into next week’s FOMC meeting.
- Digging into the suite of unwanted inflationary impulses, the Middle East War continues, and US officials have indicated this could go on until 2029. Oil prices are back over US$100/bbl and, with China apparently back in the market as a buyer and supply pressures only mounting, respite seems unlikely any time soon.
- President Trump has flagged high oil prices until after the mid-terms in November.
- Bond yields globally are rising, acting as a dead weight on asset valuations, including equities.
- Back home, the Australian market has remained under pressure all week. Post commentary from the RBA’s Sarah Hunter, Assistant Governor, and Andrew Hauser, Deputy Governor, the prospect of more RBA rate hikes against stubborn inflation is back on the cards.
- Citi just upgraded its expectations for two more RBA rate hikes this year, lifting the terminal rate to 4.85%. The change is due to stubborn inflation from supply constraints, a tight labour market and elevated services inflation. The first rate cut is now pushed out to 4Q2027.
- Even the RBA doves at Westpac have now reinstated a 25bp November hike, believing the Board will prefer to wait for confirmation from the full September quarter inflation data before revising forecasts and pulling the trigger.
- The market is pricing in around an 80% chance of a 25bp hike at the September 29 RBA Board meeting. A cumulative 55bp of RBA rate hikes are priced in between now and March 2027.
- Business confidence slipped further into negative territory this week to August 8, with Westpac noting weaker profitability was the main factor, falling to its lowest level in years as firms “grappled with softer demand”.
- The ASX200 is off over -3% in the last five days, with InfoTech down over -7%, Consumer Discretionary off -4%, as well as Materials, down -4%. The only sectoral green on screen has been Energy, up over 3%, and Utilities, up some 0.5%.
- Although the expected weakness in September and the run-up to the US mid-terms were well flagged, it never makes the investor experience pleasant. But, at some point, sentiment will become just too bearish, requiring, at least for now, some patience and resilience. “Know your stocks”.
The team at FNArena wishes you a great weekend.
