The week that was in Australian finance:

  • The Australian market continues to remain choppy at an index level, with a downside bias. At a sector level, it remains a story of rotation and churn as narratives continue and offshore trading themes dominate.
  • The ASX200 is trading some -7% below its August 6 high, with a change in interest rate expectations to higher for longer having taken the wind out of the sentiment sails, at least for now.
  • As mentioned last week, global bond yields are higher, and talk of AI bubbles, unsustainable government deficits and geopolitics, as well as elections, continues to shroud markets in an omnipresent haze of fear and uncertainty.
  • Earnings growth in the US is directly related to the AI trade, and the pushback on AI and data centres is likely to garner more media attention in the run-up to the US midterm elections.
  • November 3 is a BIG day for Australia and the US. The RBA will hand down its rate decision, and America goes to the polls. Maybe a day at the races is what will be in order?!
  • The ASX200 index is broadly unchanged on the week, with volumes characterised as low, with school holidays and the public holiday in NSW on Monday dampening participation in the market.
  • Buying emerged in the Utilities sector, up 3% or so; Real Estate, up over 2.5%; Healthcare, also up some 2.7%; followed by Consumer Discretionary and Energy, up 1.5%, as Middle East tensions rumble on.
  • InfoTech was the weakest, down -3.6%, and Materials was down -1.5%.
  • Looking ahead to next week, Japan and the US have holidays on Monday, while the RBA’s September minutes are due out Tuesday. September’s unemployment data on Thursday will garner a lot of attention for any signs of weakening in Australia’s labour market.
  • The AGM season also kicks into gear, which should result in more up-to-date commentary around the state of the economy and how companies are faring.
  • Dividends received by investors tapered off this week to some $3.629bn, and they will continue to ease until month-end, albeit nearly $38bn of dividend payments will have hit investors’ accounts over the months of September and October.

The team at FNArena wishes you a great weekend.
