Prepare For More Volatility

Technicals | Feb 26 2013

By Michael Gable

The [Australian market] focus is back on overseas issues. Having said that, reporting season which started off with a bang, has seen a few more disappointments come through last week. If the main issues affecting our market are overseas dominated, then the dips will be a buying opportunity – but not today though. I think it is pretty obvious now that we will enter a period of consolidation with some sharp moves up and down during the next few weeks. Opportunities to grab a few stocks at cheaper levels.

ASX 200

Although the market has been very overbought for a while, I’ve been expecting it to grind higher until we see some panic selling. That panic selling occurred last week when [the ASX 200] dropped 118 points in one day. In my opinion, that is the sign that we have now likely reached a short term top in the market and we should expect some volatile consolidation to occur over the next several weeks. I still anticipate a fairly flat correction of only about 5%. As I mentioned last week, the worst case scenario is a dip to 4600 but I would still be happy buying the market only 200 points lower than current levels.
