It will be one of those weekends in which we may see significant developments in Europe or we may not. Cyprus is currently the mouse that roared, and at this stage Cypriote banks will be opening on Tuesday to face a run, unless some other solution can be found in the interim. The Cypriote central bank is moving to consolidate Cyprus commercial banks and protect smaller deposits, but no doubt the Cypriote people will be inclined to withdraw their savings just in case. Unless those savings are frozen.

This week is a short week across the Western World as we move towards Good Friday. Australia, New Zealand and the UK are also closed the following Monday. There’s a fair bit of economic data to cram in in the meantime.

US housing is again in the frame next week, with the Case-Shiller house price index, new home sales and pending home sales data due. These will join numbers for durable goods orders, consumer confidence, the Richmond Fed manufacturing index and the Chicago PMI. Another revision of the US December quarter GDP will be released on Thursday.

While markets are closed on Good Friday in the US, banks are open and the data keeps flowing. Next Friday we’ll see personal income and spending and consumer sentiment.

The UK will revise its December quarter GDP on Wednesday. It might be ugly.

The highlight of Australia’s economic week will be the private sector credit data due on Thursday. On Wednesday March quarter stock options will expire on the ASX, which can cause some sharp volatility in individual names.

We also have a minor run of late earnings results next week, featuring the small resources sector. Monday sees results from the likes of Mincor ((MCR)), Panoramic ((PAN)), Regis Resources ((RRL)) and Sandfire Resources ((SFR)), while Beadell Resources ((BDR)) will report on Wednesday and Ampella Mining ((AMX)) on Thursday.

The early Easter means the holiday will not coincide with school holidays in Australia this year, but after the rock and roll ride of 2013 to date there may be plenty of market players looking to get off early for a decent break.
