With tat-for-tat new tariffs coming into effect tonight in the US/China, the trade war has heated up. But hints of a possible truce on US/EU auto tariffs suggests resolution could be in the air.

Wall Street has not gone anywhere lately, largely due to this uncertainty. The Australian market has consolidated following its rally, and it, too, is now bouncing around without direction.

Tonight brings the US jobs numbers for June. The quantum is no longer the be-all and end-all, but rather wage inflation is focus this year.

Thereafter, next week is a quiet one on the global calendar, notwithstanding any new trade developments. On Friday however, the US June quarter earnings season unofficially kicks off with big banks first to the plate.

If that’s not mixing one’s metaphors.

Next week the US sees CPI inflation and consumer sentiment data.

China also delivers June inflation numbers, along with trade numbers.

In Australia, the NAB business and Westpac confidence surveys are due, along with housing finance data.

There’s nothing of note scheduled on the local corporate calendar, but the pre result season confession session appears to be in full swing.
