The week ahead looks a quiet one on the domestic economic calendar. There are no major releases and markets will be closed on Friday for the Australia Day public holiday. In between investors can further focus on quarterly production reports, with the likes of Fortescue Metals, Newcrest Mining and Independence Group scheduled for operational updates, alongside the occasional AGM, EGM and stocks going ex-dividend.

The week ahead will also see earnings result updates from companies including Credit Corp ((CCP)), CYBG ((CYB)), Navitas ((NVT)) and GUD Holdings ((GUD)).

Elsewhere around the globe, "quiet" doesn't quite cut it, but it comes close to what the calendar is showing, apart from US corporate results season. New Zealand has heard the news that, for the first time ever, its Prime Minister will take six weeks parental leave later in the year, while the Bank of Japan, on Tuesday, is expected to leave monetary policy unchanged, despite market speculation of near term tightening. Most economists remain of the view Japanese inflation and inflation expectations remain too low for BOJ policy tightening.

US Q4 GDP (scheduled for Friday) is expected to further confirm the world’s largest economy ended 2017 on solid momentum, with both household consumption and business investment lifting in response to elevated consumer and business confidence. The UK also will update on Q4 GDP on Friday.
