It’s a half day for US markets tonight and attendance will be minimal, although it is the last trading day of the month and there may be some action in the oil market.

On Sunday the Swiss vote in a referendum to determine whether the Swiss central bank will be forced to hold 20% of its reserves as gold. If the answer is “yes”, the Swiss National Bank has three years to reach this target but gold will likely see a rally to begin with. A “no” vote is less likely to spark a big sell-off.

Next week begins with a flurry on the economic front. Monday is the first of the month and thus global manufacturing PMI day, which is followed by global services PMI day on Wednesday.

US data releases next week include the PMIs, construction spending, vehicle and chain store sales, factory orders, the Fed Beige Book, and the all-important private sector and official jobs numbers.

The eurozone will see a first revision of its September quarter GDP next week ahead of an ECB policy meeting. Will Mario pull out the big guns this time, now Japan and China have upped the ante?

The RBA will also meet next week but no one much cares. It is, nevertheless, a big week for Australian data.

On a September quarter basis, we’ll see company profits and inventories, the current account, and then the GDP result on the Wednesday. On a monthly basis we’ll see the PMIs, building approvals, retail sales and the trade balance.

The local AGM season is finally behind us, but for one or two stragglers. Metcash ((MTS)) will release its interim profit result on Monday. On Friday, S&P/ASX will announce the quarterly promotion and relegation of stocks in and out of its indices.
