The week that was in Australian finance:
-This week was all about rising bond yields, not only in Australia but globally. It’s a combination of higher oil prices from ongoing retaliatory attacks between the US and Iran, as well as AI super-cycle capex funding, placing more pressure on US and global debt burdens. Inflationary pressures give the bond vigilantes more reason to sell bonds (or go short).
-For Australians, the prospect of further interest rate hikes moved closer this week, post stronger-than-expected June quarter GDP data.
-As highlighted by ANZ Bank, the housing downturn continued in August, prompting further Big Bank downgrades to the forecast decline this cycle.
-The markets are now pricing in a 60% chance of an RBA rate hike at the September 29 meeting, with the August labour force data due out on September 24.
-A full 25bp rate hike is now priced in for the November meeting, with UBS flagging the possibility of an additional post-November hike this cycle.
-HSBC economist Paul Bloxham reversed his prior expectation for no more rate hikes to one in September and one in November. The RBA is stuck between a rock and a hard place, with the economy bifurcated between struggling households and the housing sector, and insufficient capacity in the industrial sector — think data centres, infrastructure and mining — all leading to sticky inflation.
-Against this backdrop, the Australian market performed well, with the index off slightly. But, as has been the case all year, the sector rotations were notable.
-After a -10.5% sell-off in the banks in August, the sector outperformed this week, with Financials up 2.35%, which Tony Sycamore at IG attributes to short covering.
-The massive outperformance by BHP Group ((BHP)) over August was unwound this week with profit-taking and the stock going ex-dividend. Materials are down over -4%, despite strength in Gold stocks.
-InfoTech was under pressure again, off over -5%, while Utilities retreated -1%. Healthcare managed to continue its rally, up some 0.8%.
-Fed Governor Waller poured cold water on the possibility of a rate hike at the upcoming September 16 FOMC meeting, albeit much will be riding on the August CPI print due out September 11.
-Market commentators remain wedded to expectations for ongoing volatility in US markets, with scope for September to live up to its historical reputation as one of the worst months for shares. Much will depend on the August PPI and CPI prints next week, and where they take bond traders.
