ASX Top Gainers & Losers plus Market Snapshot – 14 November 2013

European markets pushed ahead nicely overnight whilst US markets were steady, whilst Yellen discussed the US recovery, monetary policy and potential tapering. After a cautious open, the S&P/ASX 200 powered forward for the 2nd consecutive session, fuelled in part by the strength coming from the commodities sector overnight, and by close of trade was 46.3 points higher or 0.86% on volume of $3.6 billion.

Green screens across every sector was a pleasant sight to see today after a handle of uncertain trading sessions with Consumer Discretionary leading the way, posting a 1.36% rise with the Industrial sector the next best placed, rising 1.22% by close of trade. Those performing well but less so than the leaders, were the Information Technology and Health Care sectors, rising 0.32% and 0.37% respectively.

Looking over the charts

Our market managed to bounce off recent lows and set a new higher low with the setup looking very strong. No doubt many traders who may have missed the recent rally from mid October to the end of October would love the opportunity to get in at lower levels but the pullbacks just haven’t been deep enough to allow entry at lower levels. It is a competitively bid market and traders need to set their risk/reward trades and get in at levels that make sense according to their trading plan. Markets are trending so trending systems are the ones that will be benefitting most from the current strength.

ASX top 200 stock analysis

Fairfax Media ((FXJ)) has largely been trading sideways but the 6.09% jump in price today pushes it close to breaking into new 6 month highs and will be one to watch closely on Monday for a further potential break to the upside.
