It’s the Martin Luther King Jr holiday in the US on Monday and all markets are closed. Thereafter the US earnings season will continue to hot up with plenty of big ticket and Dow names due to release. How goes the season will very much determine how goes the stock market. General Electric (Dow) is in the frame tonight.

It’s a quiet week for US economic data releases next week with the exception of Thursday, which sees existing home sales, the FHFA house price index, the Conference Board leading economic index and a flash manufacturing PMI for January. The flashing is joined by the eurozone and China (HSBC).

It’s GDP week in Australia with the December quarter result due on Wednesday, along with Westpac’s monthly consumer confidence survey.

The Australian interim reporting season is rapidly approaching as well but we still have the bulk of the resource sector quarterly production reports to wade through. Next week sees several releases including that of BHP Billiton ((BHP)). ResMed ((RMD)) will report its quarterly profit result next Friday.
