The Australian market is now entering an historically strong period but also a thin volume period as holidays dominate the calendar in April. Queensland is already on school holidays, Easter is next weekend, and school holidays begin in other states thereafter. Anzac Day is on a Tuesday this year suggesting a flu outbreak on the Monday, and another, unofficial, four-day weekend.

US jobs data tonight will be the deciding factor as to which way markets head next week before the developed world winds down for Easter. Markets will also be watching with trepidation the meetings between Trump and Xi.

All non-Asian markets of note will be closed next Friday. This includes Wall Street, albeit economic data releases will continue to flow. Thursday sees the PPI and Friday the CPI, retail sales and consumer sentiment.

China will release inflation numbers and trade data.

In Australia we’ll see housing finance, business and consumer confidence, jobs numbers, and an RBA Financial Stability Review ahead of the Easter break.

April is also the month for March quarterly reports, specifically resource sector production reports but, increasingly more so these days, updates from companies across the market as well. And it is a month of AGMs for calendar-year reporters.

Next week sees brings Rio Tinto’s ((RIO)) AGM and ditto Macquarie Atlas Roads ((MQA)), along with production reports from Fortescue Metals ((FMG)) and Whitehaven Coal ((WHC)).
