The jury is still out on whether the Fed will or won’t raise its cash rate in December, but no one expects a hike next week. What is expected to come out of the September Fed policy meeting is the announcement of the beginning of balance sheet tapering, which is a quasi rate rise by default just as QE is a quasi rate cut.

Janet Yellen will hold a quarterly press conference after the statement release which provides the opportunity to explain the FOMC’s plans.

Central banks are in focus elsewhere next week. Recently we’ve had the ECB suggesting October is when a decision will be made on a tapering of QE and the Bank of England warning that a rate rise is not far off. The Bank of Japan meets next week but has been voted least likely of the major central banks to alter its QE/negative rate policy.

The minutes of the September RBA meeting next week will expand on why the next move in Australia’s rate will be up, but not for a while. Philip Lowe has a chance to further explain when he speaks on Thursday.

The US will see data for industrial production and retail sales tonight, and housing sentiment, housing starts and existing home sale numbers next week along with the Philly Fed activity index.

New Zealand will release its June quarter GDP result next week.

Japanese markets are closed on Monday.

On the local stock front, TPG Telecom ((TPM)) will release its earnings result on Tuesday and APA Group ((APA)) on Friday.

Next week sees another solid round of ex-dividends.
