The US jobs report for September is out tonight but commentators suggest it will be difficult to gauge any potential impact on Fed thinking given the “noise” that will be created by the hurricanes. Given the actual number of jobs lost due to the hurricanes is an unknown, the add-back to determine a realistic jobs result is also a pure guess.

US data is thin on the ground until later into next week, when inflation numbers, retail sales and consumer sentiment are due. The minutes of the last Fed meeting are out on Wednesday.

Japan is closed on Monday but China is back following the Golden Week break. China’s services PMI is due on Monday and trade numbers on Friday.

Locally we’ll see the NAB business and Westpac consumer confidence surveys next week, housing finance data and the RBA’s Financial Stability Report.

On the local stock front, after the long news vacuum that typically follows a results season, corporate activity will begin to warm up again next week. Ex-dividends have now slowed to a trickle but the AGM season will begin to quietly build. Meetings next week include those of BlueScope ((BSL)), Magellan Financial ((MFG)) and Transurban ((TCL)).

We also now move into quarterly reporting season, particularly for the resource sectors. Whitehaven Coal ((WHC)) will lead with its production report on Thursday.
