By Greg Peel

As I write, the ASX200 appears to be recovering all of yesterday’s lost ground. But the day ain’t over yet. The local market is more skittish about a trade war than the US market, but each time Wall Street fails to buckle, we recover.

Australia is (so far) exempt from US tariffs but obviously the fear relates to China and what impact tariffs will have on its economy, particularly if another US$200bn at 25% does actually go ahead.

The deadline is September 5 but in the meantime, the bank Royal Commission is back in session, and it’s rarely cheerful.

Before this backdrop next week we see the local reporting season in full swing, following a trickle to date. Heavy hitters next week include Transurban ((TCL)), AMP ((AMP)), Commonwealth Bank ((CBA)) and Suncorp ((SUN)), but we’re now at the point at which there will simply be too many to highlight. Please refer to the FNArena Calendar (link above).

On the economic front, Australian data releases next week include ANZ job ads and housing finance. The RBA meets briefly on Tuesday and Philip Lowe speaks on Wednesday, ahead of the release of the RBA’s quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy on Friday.

The RBNZ meets on Thursday.

China will release trade and inflation data next week.

Inflation data will be the only highlight in the US.

Japan will report June quarter GDP on Friday.
