The US government is back in business. As to what happens with regard the backlog of economic data releases held over during the shutdown is unclear. Presumably at some point the worker bees will assemble the data and offer up delayed numbers, such as September non-farm payrolls.

Once we get past today’s Chinese GDP release, which might refocus the world away from Washington for once, next week’s US data should include the Chicago Fed national activity index, the Richmond Fed manufacturing index, existing and new home sales, FHFA house prices, durable goods and the Michigan Uni fortnightly consumer sentiment measure.

Thursday will bring flash manufacturing PMI estimates for China (HSBC), the eurozone and US. China will also release property prices and industrial profits numbers during the week. Friday brings Japan’s CPI. Ah yes, Japan is still there too.

The UK will release its first September quarter GDP estimate on Friday. Should be a cracker, if recent data are anything to go by.

For Australia, the focus will be on Wednesday’s September quarter CPI release. Having said that, no one much expects another rate cut this year (although there remain a few diehards) so even a weak inflation result won’t necessarily mean a lot. There is, however, the small problem of an Aussie back on the rise and no sign of Fed tapering, it is assumed, until well into 2014.

On the local corporate front, next week brings an avalanche of AGMs. Among the highlights, the tea and bikkies will be handed out by Brambles ((BXB)), Origin Energy ((ORG)), Amcor ((AMC)), Newcrest Mining ((NCM)), Toll Holdings ((TOL)) and Transfield Services ((TSE)). BHP Billiton ((BHP)) will report its quarterly production next week and AMP ((AMP)) will release quarterly funds flow data.
