How long can Wall Street keep pushing higher in the summer holidays on no volume with the unlikelihood of any real new news out of Europe until next month? In theory the broad US stock market is now poised at a significant technical level of resistance. A positive Wall Street has been providing a more confident underlying tone for an Australian market currently in the middle of earnings season.

So far the local earnings season has proven pretty reasonable, with a few exceptions. Next week is the busiest in the calendar before we taper off a little in the final week of August, which this year ends on the Friday. Highlights next week include results from Amcor ((AMC)), BHP Billiton ((BHP)), Woodside Petroleum ((WPL)), Fortescue Metals ((FMG)), Fairfax ((FXJ)), Qantas ((QAN)), Billabong ((BBG)) and Woolworths ((WOW)) among many, many more. We''ll also see a June quarter sales result from David Jones ((DJS)).

It's a quiet week for Australian economic data, with the RBA minutes a highlight on Tuesday before governor Glenn Stevens makes a regular testament to the Senate committee on Friday. Friday also sees June quarter construction work done, another precursor to the June quarter GDP result due in the second week of September.

The Fed minutes will also feature next week, and the US will see existing homes sales, new home sales, the FHFA house price index and durable goods.

The eurozone will provide a flash estimate of its composite PMI next week and HSBC will provide a flash estimate of China's manufacturing PMI. On Friday the UK will revise its June quarter GDP number.

All that aside, the market seems rather poised at this level. It's hard to know what next week might bring, but volume is not likely to be involved.
