It’s another big week ahead for US quarterly earnings results, with next week featuring Dow components Merck, Pfizer, US Steel, Exxon, Chevron and Proctor & Gamble, along with Mastercard, ConocoPhillips, Deutsche Bank and UBS.

It is also a very important week for US data, culminating in Friday’s non-farm payrolls release. With Wall Street now all but conceding to Fed tapering sooner rather than later, we might assume, without any great deal of confidence, that a good jobs number will be well-received and vice versa. A good jobs number might just be enough to propel the S&P 500 through 1700 for the first time, but there’s a whole week of trading in between.

US economic data releases next week include pending home sales, house prices, consumer confidence, construction spending, the manufacturing PMI and private sector jobs. While jobs numbers provide each month’s US data highlight, next week will also see the release of the first estimate of June quarter GDP on Wednesday, and a Fed policy meeting to boot. Is there anything left for the Fed to say?

Australia will also see a July manufacturing PMI release, on the Thursday, along with HSBC’s Chinese number and numbers from the eurozone, UK and US. The rest of Australia’s week is filled out with building approvals, private sector credit, the Rismark house price index and the June quarter PPI.

Japan will also release manufacturing and industrial production data, and on Thursday night both the ECB and Bank of England will hold policy meetings.

On the local stock front, the resource sector quarterly production reports start to wind down with AWE ((AWE)), Beach Energy ((BPT)), Whitehaven Coal ((WHC)) and Origin Energy among the highlights. The results season begins to swing into gear, with Navitas ((NVT)), Energy Resources of Australia ((ERA)) and Transurban ((TCL)) among others in the frame while ResMed ((RMD)) will announce a quarterly result. Woolworths ((WOW)) will announce June quarter sales on Monday.
