Wall Street has pulled back from all-time highs and from psychological big figures for the indices as year-end approaches, and ahead of tonight’s non-farm payroll report. A strong lead in from this week’s ADP private sector jobs report – the strongest all year – bodes well for a solid result but the question is as to just how Wall Street will react. A good number, in theory, increases the odds of tapering. Is that good or bad?
With tax-selling and the locking in of profits influencing trade through December, downside pressure is apparent. In past years fund managers have chased the market to the close of books up but this year the market has already seen a significant return.
Beyond the jobs numbers, next week is a quiet one for US data releases. Tuesday sees wholesale trade, Thursday business inventories and retail sales, and Friday the PPI.
It’s a monthly data dump week in China next week, beginning with inflation numbers on Monday. Tuesday brings industrial production, retail sales and fixed asset investment.
In Australia we’ll see ANZ job ads on Monday, the NAB business confidence survey on Tuesday along with housing finance and investment lending, and the Westpac consumer confidence survey on Wednesday. On Thursday it's Australia’s own jobs numbers.
Following this week’s raft of IPOs, including Dick Smith and Nine Entertainment, we’ll see another round next week with five lesser known names up for listing. The demerger of Recall from Brambles ((BXB)) is also due.
Amcor ((AMC)) will discuss its own demerger on Monday, while over the week Macquarie Group ((MQG)) will hold a shareholders meeting and Billabong ((BBG)) and Westpac ((WBC)) will hold AGMs.
