Markets are closed in Australia on Monday for the long weekend and on Wednesday China closes down for a week for the New Year holiday.

It’s a quiet week for Australia economically up until the private sector credit data due on Friday, but elsewhere there will be plenty of releases to ponder.

The US will see new and pending home sales, the Case-Shiller house price index, two measures of consumer confidence, durable goods, the Richmond Fed manufacturing index, personal income and spending and the Chicago PMI. The Fed will meet on Wednesday and expectations are for another US$10bn of tapering to be announced. On Thursday the first estimate of US December quarter GDP will be released.

The UK will release its first GDP estimate on Tuesday, and expectations are for a strong result. Japan will see releases for its trade balance, retail sales, industrial production, unemployment and inflation across the week.

On the local stock front, the late run of resource sector production reports will begin to merge with early profit result releases as the week progresses. Production numbers are due from Oil Search ((OSH)), Fortescue Metals ((FMG)) and Origin Energy ((ORG)) among others while Energy Resources of Australia ((ERA)) and Navitas ((NVT)) are expected to lead out the results season.
