The week that was in Australian finance:

  • “If a week is a long time in politics, it can be an eternity in financial markets”
  • The ASX200 is tracking some 1% higher for the week after what is proving to be a roller-coaster ride of volatility, following the expected RBA’s 25bp rate hike on Tuesday and the US mid-term elections.

  • The index recorded its best day in 1.5 years on Thursday, up 2.61% to 9065, on the coattails of a strong overseas rally following the Democratic sweep of Congress.

  • The narrative that day was ‘gridlock’ is good for markets, which morphed into massive deleveraging and unwinding of the AI trade on Thursday, US time, as concerns over the blue Democratic wave and the AI buildout re-surfaced (again).

  • Arguably, it’s become a process now, as selling can beget more selling, and then question marks about AI-related debt grow, as well as question marks around US economic growth. The AI buildout, like in Australia, has been one of the major growth drivers for the economy.

  • Bank earnings were in focus this week, with a suite of relative hits and misses: Westpac ((WBC)) slightly disappointed on Monday, but National Australia Bank ((NAB)) missed by more on Thursday, as bad debt provisioning rose.

  • Macquarie Group’s ((MQG)) results on Friday were better than expected, but the share price reaction is probably not helped by poor sentiment following the steep sell-off in US investment banks.

  • Next week, ANZ Bank ((ANZ)) reports FY26 earnings on Monday, with CommBank ((CBA)) and Bendigo & Adelaide Bank ((BEN)) announcing quarterly updates.

  • In terms of quarterly and AGM updates, there is more evidence of a domestic economy under pressure, which will probably be exacerbated by the latest rate rise and a weak housing market.

  • Morgan Stanley has joined CommBank in forecasting a -10%-15% fall in Australian residential property prices, from peak to trough, with conditions unlikely to bottom before the second half of 2027.

  • UBS expects the RBA to remain on hold at 4.85% before delivering two rate cuts in late 2027 and early 2028.

  • The Australian market has the scope to ‘potentially’ outperform the more tech-heavy US markets, with considerably lower AI exposure.

  • As was witnessed this week, bombed-out share prices are continuing to attract corporate interest, with Goodman Group ((GMG)) and US-based Digital Realty raiding NextDC’s ((NXT)) share register for up to a 9.9% stake.

  • NextDC’s 50% price rally boosted the Info Tech index this week, up some 8%. Buying was also strong across Communications, Real Estate, Staples and Consumer Discretionary.

  • By contrast, Energy fell nearly -8% as oil prices retreated following the mid-terms, while Financials and Materials were flat.

The team at FNArena wishes you a great weekend.
