The week that was in Australian Finance:

-The S&P/ASX 200 index reached a new record high, closing at 8,115 points, buoyed by a rally in Wall Street and optimism around potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and other central banks.

-The Australian share market has been influenced by significant volatility in the US tech sector. Major tech companies like Nvidia, Tesla, Meta, and Alphabet experienced double-digit declines, raising concerns about the sustainability of the AI-driven market rally. This has led to a rotation from tech stocks to value and cyclical shares, impacting investor sentiment globally, including in Australia.

-Post the June quarter CPI reading, the Australian market expectations have shifted from the probability of a future interest rate rise at the upcoming August RBA meeting to the possibility of a -25bp rate cut before year end.

-Fed Chair Jerome Powell hinted at potential rate cuts in September, despite maintaining current rates.

-Soft economic data from the US has stoked fears of a possible recession, leading to declines in major indices like the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq. The US 10-year treasury yield dipped below 4% for the first time since February. This has created a ripple effect, impacting the Australian market’s outlook for the end of the week.
